As of last year a supergroup has been bubbling and brewing under our noses by the name of Child Rebel Soldier, and featuring the likes of Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West and Pharrell Williams. They’ve been closely watched by the hip hop community ever since having name dropped in and out of places, namely in Fall Out Boy’s “Arms Race” remix, (where both Kanye and Lupe feature) where Lupe raps “I pray to the Lords of War, every man and mac eleven that all good child rebel soldiers go to AK47 heaven and a land mine in every playground that they step in”. The group also releasing a track “Us Placers” on Kanye’s 2007 mixtape “Can’t tell me nothing”. The track samples Thom Yorke’s “The Eraser”.
Kanyes “Glow In The Dark” tour was announced earlier this year and features Lupe Fiasco, N.E.R.D and Rihanna too for some bullshit reason but so far only one American show has been announced. Apparently more packages shall be soon added… they better go international or else. Although nothing is official, future work has been announced for planning for late 2008 and in an interview with Real Talk NY, Lupe states that what’s currently being constantly discussed is whether their format of production will be output as an album, or perhaps something else. Interesting!
Personally, as crazy as this collaboration is, i genuinely can’t see anything that ground breaking coming out of it more so than what each member would naturally execute individually. Putting three figures of such creative excellence together seems like a smooth move but the clashes in creativity would be too much for stuff to just… work. I’m sure they’ll have some tricks to pull off and their success will most likely be unparalleled in the sense of popularity/exposure/cash flow, however the quality of their work collaboratively is something i really can’t see as again being “ground breaking”… it will surely be excellent work though, i mean i have to admit, i do like “Us Placers” quite a bit.
